From retail experience to lifestyle experience: reimagining a dated retail destination.

The Challenge

Restoring the reputation of a classic shopping mall at a key moment of transition.     

As consumer expectations for retail shifted after the pandemic, real estate developer Macerich wanted to reinvent Lakewood Center, a mall first established in 1950’s Los Angeles, to refresh its brand and give modern-day customers a better experience. We tapped into our deep commercial retail experience to help Macerich restore Lakewood as a community hub.

OUR Impact

A community-centric brand identity to give Lakewood Center new life.  

Our findings synthesized the trends, governmental, demographic, and business factors with key customer needs to develop a north star positioning to guide the development. Macerich is using the guidelines and guardrails we provided to unite architecture, store mix, marketing, and programming to ultimately create a cohesive and exciting branded experience for the Lakewood community.
